What a week this has been. Last Saturday we drove up to Winnemucca Nevada for a show at the historic Martin Hotel. It was sponsored by the Great Basin Arts and Entertainment Society headed by Bill Simms. The Show was yet another reason we love playing in smaller towns...such a warm reception and we can't wait to come back there soon... Great Basin Arts link
The next day...sun 10/9, I drove back down to Fresno (more on that later) to see SEAL SEAL website Cyrise and I rocked the front row and I've never had such amazing seats for a show ....What an amazing performer and transmitter of energy...Seal, I'm ready to open for you :).
Then it was back to the Bay area for 25 hours of Yom Kippur Fasting...at Chochmat Halev (well technically we were in a church, but that was the only space that could accomodate the 1000 people there.) It's always powerful praying in community and really makes me appreciate my morning coffee even more this week
So that's it for now...today we are headed up to Humboldt county to rock with our friends and quick study bass player Lucash at Humboldt Brewery....
Hey did anyone get their post card? I tried this new USPS onlive way of sending them out and would love to get feedback from y'all... Looking forward to celebrating my birthday this month...and halloween...Montana here we come!

Latest news, I was recently on the KPIG hot seat in Santa Cruz for a couple songs where the audience writes.emails in and can make or break you. Lucky for me, on a Sunday at 10am people were in a good mood and I got some love from Colorado (online listeners) and from SC.
Speaking of Radio, I've recently been added to KPCW in Park City Utah, WNCW in Asheville NC, have had spins on KAOS in Olympia and we are planning a tour our east this December...

In Other News I'll be collaborating with a film-maker on our first real video later this month...if anyone wants to be in it, just email us...
I recently was the best man in my best friend Torsten Sannar's wedding in LA and while down there, he turned me on to an amazing artist that you have to check out ...Anders Osborne...from New Orleans, this man is the real deal Anders Osborne. We listen to him all the time on the road...
The other summer favorite which came care of Kernel Pete is Owsley. His first album in particular (1999) which won a grammy for the best engineered album of 1999.
Finally, The Effects of Hurrican Katrina are still being felt by the thousands of homeless and even more bereaved in the south. This month I am donating 100% of the profits from my online CD sales to the American Red Cross to help. So please contribute either through my website or anyway you can they need you.

Hey friends,
Just got back from a week in Arizona... what an adventure! WE played 7 shows in 5 days and ade seom good friends in Tempe, Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Sedona. The highlight was a rockin' show in Flagstaff and running through the red rocks of Sedona. Also, we started off the tour in Vegas and I've officially forsaken slots now and now a card player thanks to the tutelage of the Professor of Texas Hold 'em. Other tid bits, our new Keyboard player name is officially Professor Nutcake Fruitball Cole Alanson and our bass player has earned the rank of Colonel Pete Roberts. Matt's nick name wsa harder to peg, but for now, it's killer. What out for costumes comin' on stage.
Thefollowing questions are from an interview I just did for two online
magazines
Describe the process of songwriting - is it
autobiographical, based on stories of people you know, or entirely fictional?
Songs
come to me in three ways, all preceded by a double soy latte at least. The
first is sitting with a blank piece of paper in front of me and asking the
question, who wants to be written about today? Sometimes the response comes to
me in the form of people’s names and characters whom I may or may not
know. Then the challenge is to put them into situations that are interesting
enough to keep people’s attention which is difficult because our
attention span these days at best is that of a ferret on a double espresso.
The
second way I write songs is in reaction to interaction with the
world/people/situations as an attempt to harmonize a chaotic universe. Finally,
there are concept songs or message songs that border on soccio-political
message music. I favor the last one the least, I think that people’s
hearts are opened via stories and whatever the artist is trying to say can be
expressed through them or the characters therein.
2) Do
the lyrics come first - or the music? – 90% of the time the music comes first
although sometimes I get 2 –3 words that can spark a whole tune
3)
How long have you been playing music?
– since the Paleolithic era
4) Who are your musical influences? – All good
music. I ‘ve been through so many phases that it would take a whole
magazine to list them but I’ll give a nod to the Duke, Satch, JB, Wes,
Hendrix, Stevie, Marley, and lately I’ve been really moved by Gavin
Degraw’s “Stripped” record (it’s the unproduced version
of his studio album) he’s an amazing singer and a fantastic songwriter
5) What are the drawbacks and advantages of being an
independent musician? – Advantages are total creative freedom, being on your own
schedule, and not working for waste management companies (research who really
owns the majors for more info on that one). The disadvantages are having to
juggle booking, press, publicity, band maintenance, email lists, the web, radio
interviews, and being an office geek
amidst
the ever raging artist that demands your attention, time, and self-expression.
6) What are your immediate and long-term goals as an artist?- Immediate Goals are to
continue touring the Western United States ( I’ve been to Idaho, Montana,
Arizona, and am en route to Utah, Washington, and Oregon) and expand to the
whole country by next year then go to Europe in 2006 and keep expanding the
circle of gigs and people we
meet
and play for until we are playing 300 shows a year. Get my music into film, I
love that medium and can’t wait to collaborate with a film-maker.
Artistically to put out better and more heartfelt music that heals the people
who hear it. I play music to heal the world and feel that through every song,
note and chord I have a unique opportunity to touch people’s lives and
lift them up the way music has healed and lifted me all my life.
7) Discuss your best & worst gigs ever. We just had an amazing
gig in Flagstaff, Arizona where the audience came up on stage with us and
people were singing and we had someone jump up and rap..it was off the hook.
Now the worst gigs, I’ve blocked them out of memory mostly but there was
this one gig… no I can’t…email me saul@saulkaye.com for details on that one
or check out www.saulkaye.com and
I’ll post it
8) Do you have a day job? If so, what is it? – I taught music for
the last 10 years before jumping into the touring life full time. Now
it’s all music
9) What do you do when the crowd "doesn't get it"? shoot ‘em ;@);
but seriously, I’ve had to win over some tough crowds over the last
couple years and every crowd is so different, you have to read ‘em and
tune in to what they want, because after all, it is
all
about the audience, if they ain’t happy, then I’m not doing my job
10) Which tracks are you most proud of and why? On this record, I like
how Desert Blues came out really naturally and Hey Johnny Johnny was the one
take miracle of the record.
Both
tunes have a lot of energy and I can feel that when I listen. I also like the
way “Boxing with Jim Beam” came out…it feels complete and the
textures of the sounds lay a solid foundation for the story to unfold…
11) When did you decide to be a musician? – It was
decided for me before I entered this lifetime and it took me until age 14 to
commit to it. Everytime I’ve tried something else, music has gently
redirected me …
12) What are your favorite records of all time, and what
impact did they have on you as both a musician and as a person?- wow, tough question. I
think that Peter Gabriel’s “US” had a huge impact on me
emotionally during that time and the way he blends world music
with
really organic production on that record and depth of soul is beautiful.
Sting’s “Ten Summoner’s Tales” also inspired me towards
more complex harmonies, tight arrangements, and great songwriting. Michael
Hedges’ “ Ariel Boundaries” blew my mind technically and
creatively. Oh Yeah, Jimi’s “Electric LadyLand” is deeply
embedded into my cellular structure…so many other great records Joni
Mitchells Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter is an epic work in her depth of
emotion, lyrical prowess, and totality of musical vision and expression
